Nimrod was a machine displayed at the Exhibition of Science during the Festival of Britiain that opened on the 3rd of May 1951. It was a machine designed to be able to play the game Nim based on an old chinese game 'Jianshizi'. The thing that took most people by surprise is that the majority of the time it would be able to beat humans. Luckily films like Terminator or War Games weren't out at this point but it may be what inspired them. Nimrod is certainly famous but not as famous as it should be. Many believe that Nimrod spawned the idea of video games and consider it to be the grandfather of arcade cabinets. I would agree with said conclusion as at a time like 1951 computers were incredibly new, used basically only in war times and in the offices of very important organsiations so the recreational use of one could very well have been concieved through Nimrod, thus making it a very- if not the most, significant development in all video game platforms, more specifically, the arcade platform.
